REVIEW:

It was only a normal day in Chicago when everything changed. A new star appeared in the sky, granting some humans superpowers. They called themselves epics, and took over the world. The day the epics took over Chicago was the day young David Charelsto watched his father murdered by the strongest epic of them all: Steelheart. Now, years later, 18-year-old David is ready for revenge.

I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I’m kind of a sucker for a good superhero story,  so this book kind of has my name written all over it.

Some things that I particularly enjoyed about this book where the characters and the plot twists. I absolutely loved David, and I loved going on this journey with him as he seeks out revenge and learns about power and what it does to people. I thought he was an enjoyable character to see everything through, I just loved him. Also, he made me laugh. You guys, his metaphors will kill you. And of course, there’s the plot twists!

If you like a lot of action in your books, I would definitely recommend this book! It was done really well. Sometimes I feel like too much action really just kills the story, but Sanderson did an amazing job balancing the action with quiet parts and planning. Everything felt purposeful and important, even the quiet parts. I don’t think I was bored once!

There was only one thing I didn’t love quite as much about this book, and that was one minor thing about the romance. For the most part, the romance was done really well! There was only one problem with it, and that was the main character’s obsession with this girl felt just slightly stalkerish at times. It was a very minor problem, and I only noticed it maybe twice in the whole book, but that was, I think, the only downfall of the book in my opinion.

The Blurb

Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart — the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning — and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.

About the Author

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.
